Introduction.
In 2013, though NASA was facing the end of an era of space shuttle flights, a new flagship experience was created to tell its 30-year, 135 mission story. Lexington was proud to collaborate on Space Shuttle Atlantis, an extremely unique and exciting attraction.
What we did.
From converting standard-sized images into awe-inspiring supersized wall coverings to the coordination and creation of a full-scale reproduction of the Hubble Space Telescope, Lexington played a key role in creating virtually every one of the over 60 visual and interactive experiences visitors enjoy. This includes the full-scale, 184-foot vertical replica of the space shuttle’s external tank and two solid rocket boosters located at the entrance to the exhibit, a 43’ long replica of the Hubble Telescope, a scale replica of an International Space Station (ISS) module , the Shuttle Launch Experience, Astronaut Training Simulators with 21 consoles modeled on actual NASA training simulators; the On Orbit Gallery, with an actual 8,000-pound space shuttle main engine and virtual reality simulators that invite guests to test their spacewalking skills or take the controls in a space shuttle cockpit replica; and The Re-entry Zone, where visitors see what it takes for astronauts to land the orbiter.
How we did it.
Lexington collaborated with industry partners over 18 months, to design, build and create authentic elements, displays and immersive features and exhibits for all of the interactive experiences throughout the $100 million attraction.
